After reading some of the comments from the readers in the article, I was glad to see that Doug posted this viewpoint. I know anything can happen and this man will suffer the rest of his life with the memories of that day.

Oh Gosh! I remember this being posted here. I feel so very sorry for all persons and families involved - on both sides.IMHO, Mr. Grubbs being charged is tough enough .... but, to live the rest of your life, at 74, with that burden on his shoulders...

Ohio man charged in double-fatal Smokies crash

We just posted this on knoxnews:

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A man faces two federal misdemeanor charges in a summer crash that killed two people inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, authorities said today.

Clyde L. Grubbs, 74, of Cincinnati was driving south on Newfound Gap Road on Aug. 19 when his Oldsmobile Bravado sport utility vehicle crossed the center line, sideswiped a Mercury sedan and hit a Harley-Davidson motorcycle head-on, park officials said.

Pit bull attacks deer in national park

GATLINBURG - A man camping in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park faces two federal misdemeanor charges today after his pit bull dog attacked a deer and injured it such that it had to be put down.

Nancy Gray, park spokeswoman, identified the dog owner as Manny Wall, who was camping at Elkmont on Wednesday morning when the attack occurred. Gray could not provide a hometown for Wall.

Rhododendron's weak, shallow roots may contribute to landslides

I thought this story by Morgan Simmons in Tuesday's News Sentinel is kinda interesting:

The spread of rhododendron in the Southern Appalachians may increase the likelihood of landslides during and after intense rain, according to a study by the U.S. Forest Service and the University of North Carolina.

Researchers tested 15 species of trees on a mountain in western North Carolina to determine how well their roots held the soil and stabilized mountain slopes. One of th

Gone fast: No more tickets to Smokies rededication

GATLINBURG - They went fast.

The 2,000 open-to-the-public free seats for the Sept. 2 Great Smoky Mountains National Park rededication ceremony at Newfound Gap are gone, less than a day after they were offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

As of this morning, park officials said they had received more requests than space will allow for the rededication ceremony. That means that additional requests for tickets will no longer be accepted.

Man, 78, becomes oldest person to walk all the trails in Smokies

We had this story in the News Sentinel today:

Three years ago, having already hiked all the maintained trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park twice, Cecil Rowe decided to go one more round.

Rowe had just turned 75. Presented with the opportunity to become the oldest person to hike all 800-plus miles of trails in the Smokies, he rallied the support of his hiking friends and hit the trail.

I must have really made someone mad. I tried to respond to a post and was told my comment had to be "approved for everyone to see". I've never had this happen before - clarification, please?!

Thanks for the clarification, Jigsha. (Regarding how everything a person posts gets removed when they leave). I had no clue how that worked. Yep, I miss Al Smith and his wonderful posts. And thank YOU, for saying you hoped I would stay here.

Jigsha,
I've notice in the past few days that all my photos in my blogs have sudden grew into monster sizes. I had save most of them to a very small setting and they were in those small sizes until about 2 days ago. I went back into the edit page and resize them down again.....but they are still showing very large. Might want to check that out with your web staff. Mike

Jigsha, "Sarah", "Alex", whoever is back. (S)he struck around 4:00 AM, I'm the first to see it so I'm letting you know. "Sarah" has all this political stuff, "Brinda Coleman" sounded a lot more fun. Thanks, and Have a good day, Tim.

Hey Jigsha,

Notice that you have had one of my photos on the 75th smokies part of the front page for a while. Thanks, but I like a by-line, lol. You should consider hiring me for some research stories. I know you have to edit and rewrite them for my grammar errors, but I think we could work something out. What you think?

Hi Jigsha. Thought you should know our friend "Alex" may have returned under the name of "Sarah." Real person or spam-bot, the two posts have nothing to do with the Smokies...
