My husband and I are ex military (Army). I am a weaver, stringed instrument player, camper, hiker, and picture taker. I enjoy doing all the above in the GSMNP.
Ahhh, I see. I was afraid I might have insulted literary sensibilities with my comment. I have never been to Joyce Kilmer but I imagine the trees are increditble. I noticed you are from Memphis. I live there for almost 14 years. It was an experience for a East Tennessee country girl. I love the music and art and even parts of the city. But if was really flat! I drove out to Shelby forest just to find more trees and a maybe a hill.
I like your window photo. I love to shoot into and through windows. I had not done any photography in about 20 yrs. until 2 years ago when I bought my first digital camera...I am once again obsessed with photography and nature. Thanks again for your comment.

Kathy, We didn't see the games in the parks. Frank's job was very demanding and e had 4 kids in school so we filled our weekends and holidays going and doing. We loved visiting the little villages - they were so old and quaint. We were surprised how the livestock literally lived right in an area of the house comparable to our garages. Every inch of land around a house was used for vegetables and gorgeous flowers. We also got a kick out of the pets going to restaurants but we rarely saw children eating out. The lifestyle was so slow paced and felaxing. Fasching was a wild time - we got caught in a parade in Insbruck during Fasching and it was CRAZY. Christmas was absolutely beautiful with all the villages having their own Christmas markets with the hot mulled wine and beautiful decorations. I could listen all day to a German teacher at the elem school wherre I worked - the history of that country is unbelievable and the centuries old buildings still standing are awesome. Trier had ruins from the Roman Empire that was hard to believe had been standing forever! It was a great tour and a wonderful education for our kids. Great memories.
Do you ever wish you could go back? We say that a lot but we heard from people that were ther after the Berlin wall came down that things changed a lot. The history in Germany is amazing and the people appreciate their country so much because they lost so much during the war. It is so clean and you just don't see litter laying around anywhere. One of our favorite places was Rothenburg - we went there often in all seasons. We did volksmarches and traveled by car but never did any camping. It was a wonderful experience. We came back to the states in '82. Know the Marienburg Fortress very well. The hill opposite the "castle" had the best little cafe that served the yummiest fruit wines. Weren't the vineyards just incredible!? Oh my, I could go on forever!!!
Kathy, You've mentioned living in Germany a couple of times. When were you there and where did you live? We were there in the early 80's - lived in Kitzingen near Wurzburg. We took the kids out of school one winter and took a trip south to Garmisch and Austria. It was Feb and the snow was incredible - feet and feet of it!! They just keep going in it whereas here if we get 2" they close everything. Of course, those people deal with snow 5 mos out of the year so they well equipped. It was a wonderful tour and we loved the time we spent there. Beautiful, CLEAN country!!
Kathy, Just wanted to thank you for posting that gorgeous pic of Bald River Falls. Frank and I just had to see it in person yesterday - WOW! The whole area down there was unbelievable and we had "another" wonderful day!!
Kathy B.......good morning! And thanks for the note. Yeah, it was rather embarassing, to say the least. I was trying to send Helene something, and I ended up sending it to myself. What can I say? I am a techno dinosaur, and have little or no skills at all. I only hope I am sending this to you, and not myself again!
Happy January..........
