I've been using the Big Agnes pad along with a Big Agnes sleeping bag for the past few years and couldn't be happier. For an old fart like me it provides a great night's sleep and excels my old thermarest. The extra time with deflation is no big dea…

I know it was only an hour show but I believe they could have gotten a little more in depth about the AT.

The government can't even enforce camping at "designated only" campsites. I see tamped down vegetation and remains of campfires everywhere in backcountry areas. You also can't keep hikers from straying off of designated trails. It is part of the wil…

Accommodations

I am interested in inexpensive but clean motel suggestions near the park. I enjoy backpacking but occasionally like to day hike and return to a hot shower and soft bed. I stayed at Dock's Motel in Townsend a while back and it was both affordable and nice. Any recommendations in other nearby towns?

Has anyone ever seen a large cat in the Smokies? I was hiking the Boogerman Train in the Cataloochee area in August of 2007 and saw a large black cat (panther?). I had stepped off the main trail to explore a side trail. As I stepped back on the main trail I saw what I thought at first was a bear cub crouching beside the trail several yards away. It froze when it spotted me and then jumped on the trail and ran away from me. I then saw it was not a bear cub but some kind of very large cat with a l… Continue

Nice to meet you. Thanks for the sympathy (lower back trouble) Regarding the improvement on the highway system through the Ocoee River gorge, will it be a new highway or improvements to the old? I have heard rumors of a new highway across the mountains to NC. Either way, I just hope the least amount of environmental damage will occur. Glad someone who is an avid outdoorsman such as yourself is involved in something like this. The improvements to hwy 64 (widening) below the dam are moving swiftly.

Hey Trikarman thanks for the comment! I have lived off of montvale on Sam James for several years. Always heard that they were going to 4 lane montvale or something like that but it seemed like it was just a rumor. I go the same way out to Abrams Creek campground. I noticed they removed the sign that used to be up on happy valley road so now you have to look for the Abrams View drive sign kind of carefully. It sounds like you have an interesting job anyway!
