I am going to make myself unpopular here, but what the heck. Here we go...............after reading Bryan's post about trying to find the owner of the hiker's guide he found on the trail, well, this post about urinating on an item found on the tra...

I second Adam's recommendation of Miss Lilly's in Townsend. Kind of an atypical restaurant for that area, and I mean that in a good way. They often have some creative dishes that are most delicious.

Interesting post, in light of the fact that a recent post this week was all about caring hikers finding lost items on the trail, and then trying hard to return it to the person who lost it. Next time I drop something on the trail, I will hope some...

My wife lost her shirt on the ACB several years ago; no, it wasn't the one she was wearing. It was one of her favorite shirts tucked loosely around her backpack straps. Didn't know it had fallen out until we got to the car. Later, back home in Ind...

Oh gosh, I hate to hear that. I have followed his site for some time.

I liked what Al Smith said about Ed. If you wanted to play golf with the best you'd want to play with Tiger Woods. If you wanted to shoot hoops with the best you would invite Michael Jordan. If you wanted to hike with the best, you went with Ed Wr...

So sorry to hear that. I have followed his Mt.Leconte hikes on his site for many years and was my inspiration for hiking Leconte the first time. I always hoped I could meet him some day. My condolences to the family.

i have referred to his website on a number of occasions....certainly appreciate his stories and admire what he has done.

I almost knew when I seen the title Ed Wright what it was going to say. I usually click on his site daily to read new stories. He had posted that he had been in and out of hospital with congestive heart. Knowing he could not complete his hike in J...

Your welcome, Frank. Yeah, this was an update I didn't want to write, but I figured many folks out there would want to know. Ed touched alot of us............I hope someone steps in and continues his website, as a tribute to Ed and his mountain. H...

Very sad. Followed his website for many years. He seemed to have gained many friends that shared the same love for Mt leconte.

here's a link to a recent (maybe his last trip up?) hike up to leconte........his words and enthusiasm in this write up clearly show his love for that mountain.....http://www.mtleconte.com/CH%20620-09.htm

this is sad news..........i think i may have met ed on alum cave about 10 years ago or so, but have followed his hikes through his books, website and the logbooks at leconte lodge......

I had the privilege of hiking with Ed on two occasions. He was a special individual who touched the hearts of all who met him.

You can go to Ed's website and link to a guestbook to send your condolences. Ed Wright's love of Mt LeConte inspired many people, his footprints will always be on the ACB.

Ed Wright

Ed Wright passed away yesterday. It is a sad day for me, and for all those whose lives he touched. If mountains can weep, then surely Mt. LeConte is in tears today. Ed was very kind to me and helpful, and shared so much. You will be missed, Ed. Missed, but never forgotten.

Just a delightful little hike

Bryan mentioned the Schoolhouse Gap Trail, which got me to thinking. There are tons of wondrous trails in the Smokies, many hard and challenging, some even dangerous, most of them exhilerating, and we love them all, (or most of them). Some of the toughest trails gives us the greatest rewards, both emotionally and physically. But there are some easy short hikes that have given me almost equal pleasure, in their own way, to the longer, more celebrated hikes. I wonder what short little hikes you gu… Continue

your photographs

It's not a good thing to "speak for everybody," but I think in this case, I can indeed speak for all of us when I say, thanks to everyone who puts those wonderful photographs on here. Some of us comment and thank the person, but most of us just look and admire the pictures, and say nothing. So I just want all of you who put photographs up here to know you are very much appreciated. We love your photos, even if we don't always tell you. So again, many thanks. They do indeed bring much light and j… Continue

Hiking Little Duck Hawk ridge

I just stumbled along a journal of someone who belonged to the Smoky Mt. Hiking Club, and she said years ago, the members would routinely hike out along that knife-like ridge, Little Duck Hawk ridge, (for those of you in the dark, this is a famous landmark on the ACB trail). This lady herself said she "hiked" along that ridge to cure her fear of heights. I was appalled, horrified, whatever. I have seen that ridge, and the thought of walking out along it makes my hair stand on end. You have maybe… Continue

Backpacker magazine

In the latest Backpacker magazine issue, (October), they've devoted a page to Mt.LeConte (page 38). A few pictures and 3 paragraphs. Good to see them throwing a few crumbs our way.................

That hike to Leconte means so much to me. We usually hike up Alum. We have come down the boulevard and this year there were 12 family members hiked it in August. Up Alum and we came down Rainbow. We wanted to see the falls. All had gotten there but my oldest son (38) and his girlfriend. Some had already headed down when they arrived. She was almost at the end of the log bridge when her foot slipped and she fell to the water. They are both nurses, I screamed as I seen her do it, my son thought I was screaming at a squirrel, NOT. Anyway she really wanted to try to hike out after she told me she thought she broke her tail bone. I started down to get some members to come back for packs, and I made the call to call for rescue. I found someone with cell service and he called 911. My sister was behind me and she did the same. This happened about noon and they finally got her down about 6. They do an excellent job. She did by the way break her L3. She is doing fine but no way does she want to hike again. Sad as my son loves it. When I renewed my membership I put a note in saying what a wonderful job they did, I got no comment back with membership.
So okay Ron I want to add to my list of winter care taker to rescue. To old now for that but don't tell anyone. I laughed at my youngest son (33) said to my sister, when are you and mom going to stop this. My retort to that was when I can't make it up there anymore. It was an awesome trip this year with all our family that we wanted to share that hike with. My middle grandson that lives here with me did the trip and he loved it. He also overnighted at Icewater springs along with my youngest son who always said he wanted a condo with a hot tub on the side of the mountain. He also loved it. They went to Charlies Bunion.
My first hike to Leconte was when I lost my husband from surgery after a fall. We had reservations, my boys told me to go. I said if I could make it up there I could go on. So you see how much it means to me. I posted that hike on Ed's site. 2004, I follow the AT journals and have said I wish I were younger I would like to try it. After our hike out to the Jumpoff and the Bunion on the AT my sister and I proclaimed being section hikers of the AT. We are aren't we? Ha ha

Thanks for the Welcome, Ron. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only person that feels that way about the Smokies. Some folks look at you like you must be nuts when you tell them it feels like home up there. Thanks again for the welcome.

Ron, your right about Tremont and I guess it's the bad road beyond the paved that maybe turns folks off. But, I think those on that side of the mountains are going to Cades Cove for the most part and don't know all the neat things in Tremont (on trail and off). Let's keep it our secret. lol.
