Essential backpack gear : part 3

The Sept issue of Backpacker has another list from the Boy Scout Handbook. Sorry for the redundancy, but I'm a sucker for lists:1. pocketknife
2. first-aid kit
3. extra clothing
4. rain gear
5. water bottle

8. matches and fire starter

they also recommend a repair kit, space blanket, whistle and garbage sack

Stinging Nettles Question

We were up in the GSMNPark last week and my brother-in-law got bit up by something. He thought it was chiggers, but the bites were big and red and seemed to get worse over the next couple of days and were very painful. I've been bitten by chiggers before when I have been landscaping and they were in the wheat straw bails and got all over me, but they were just minor bites, like small mosquito bites. Day Pack List of Supplies, part 2 - Survival Kit

I found an interesting old book called Practical Outdoor Survival by Len McDougal from 1992. It's been fun to read through. In one section he lists recommended items for a survival kit - which looks a lot like the list of supplies for a day pack posted here a while back, so I thought I'd share his list:Survival Knife, Schrade M7-S or USAF Survival Knife
