Very nice, Kathy. Whereabouts is this on 129 South?

Ah, you're a crafty one, my friend!!!!

I shouldn't have used the word clarification. I agree the provision speaks for itself. I guess my query to the photo department folk was a thinly disguised effort at giving them the chance to revise the wordage. I've seen several contests, etc., t...

Good catch, Gordon! Competition can be a good thing if the entrant's head is in the right place, but many amateurs don't understand what happens if the rights to his/her photograph are surrendered! I also agree with Doug that clarification in this...

Want to give me $2500 for an image I can go out and recreate again tomorrow? You bet I'd take it! Thanks for the insights, Doug, always appreciated.

yeah that's definitely true. but it does depend - there are a lot of amateur photogs that wouldn't mind at all siging away a photo for the chance to win some prize. I saw one recently that was advertising a $2500 prize, I guess in that case maybe ...

Point well taken, Doug. It goes without saying that anything posted on the internet is fair game for poachers. But the photographer has avenues of recourse that disappear if one doesn't read the "fine print" when submitting a photo and officially ...

Photo Contest...caution

I went to check out the rules for entering the Autumn photography contest mentioned on the GoSmokies home page and found this provision: BY ENTERING, ENTRANT TRANSFERS ALL RIGHT, TITLE AND INTEREST IN THE ENTRY, INCLUDING ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS, TO SPONSOR FOR ITS USE AT ITS SOLE DISCRETION. I would advise anyone entering the contest to carefully consider if the chance of winning a gift card is worth giving away all rights to your image. For some it may be, for others, like myself, it… Continue

Remarkable Gigapan image of G'Burg and mountains

I met a fellow shooting a Gigapan image while shooting rom the Gatlinburg overlook. He was kind enough to send me a link to the finished image. Gigapans are panoramas shot with a special camera mount that automatically shoots hundreds of images that are then stitched together with special software. The resulting image is huge, often several gigabytes large. At first glance it looks like a normal panorama. But since it is composed of hundreds of full-resolution images you can zoom in to the tinie… Continue

A chance to meet and all for a good cause...

The Mountainbrook Retirement Community in Sevierville will be hosting an indoor Alzheimer Fund-raising Yard Sale/Crafts Fair Friday, September 11, from 9 to 4. The booth fees collected from participants will go to the Alzheimer Foundation. I'll be there selling my Smokies photography and my wifes' hand-crafted Patchwork Purses and Make-up Bags. http://www.jandbags.com/ A dear friend, Gary Wayne Morris, will also be there with his amazing wood-burned walking sticks. http://www.cloudwalkerstn.com/… Continue

A Friend Missing...

I'm about to turn in but just got an email from a friend saying a mutual friend, AT Through-hiker and former GSMNP Ridge Runner Morgan Briggs went hiking in the Smokies several days ago and did not come back. A search is being mounted now, she said. I haven't seen anything on the news so far but I might have missed it, so if anyone hears any news about this I appreciate it if you could update this thread. Thanks.

Photo article published...

An article I wrote on breaking out of the photographic doldrums is now being featured on the TodaysPhoto.org website in case any of my GoSmokies photography buddies are interested. The hibiscus shot I posted here earlier is also todays (8/13) Photo of the Day on the site. You can check them out here: http://www.todaysphoto.org/

Thanks! I just joined and I didn't realize that when I linked my photos from a Flickr set that ALL from the group would be on the main page.

Gordon, I guess I'll just have to go withn either/or because in my amateur stage finesse really doesn't come into play!lol I love taking pics and would love to learn some of the special techniques but sometimes my manual might as well be written in Latin! I'm content being somewhat "photo impaired"! It's still fun and enjoyable.

Gordon, I just looked back at the blue heron pic and my comment didn't post so the question I had asked you wasn't there. Tony said the pic was taken in a hard rain storm but the rain itself didn't show up in the pic. I've taken several pics in the rain and snow and the rain never shows up if I'm using a slow speed and the snow doesn't show up but sometimes looks like fog if the speed is slow. Sometimes it would be really nice to have both the precip and the soft water. Just wondered if that was possible when shooting "slow"?
