i stayed a night here towards the end of May and, after raining all night, i woke up in a puddle and had to ford a raging Laurel Creek. anyways, the area got over 10 inches of rain in May and you wouldn't believe how much water was pouring into this…

...probably not worth clarification. either way, i'd say the hat had it coming
December 2
i thought so too, but everyone seems to be griping about the foliage this year.

leconte heat wave

leconte has racked up record november temps this year with a record high of 68 on the Nov 1st, beating the previous record of 66. high temps have reached the 60s on 6 days in november, so far, climbing to 66 -- now the second place record temp -- on the 8th and the 10th.

this is based on only like 20 years of data... just an interesting tidbit.

the leconte weather station saw another extreme last wednesday when 3.91 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period, the seventh highest daily total withi… Continue

thank a soldier

i thought i'd follow Mike's lead and honor a soldier who served in Iraq. my brother, Army Staff Sgt Don Steven McMahan, was killed when his convoy took on fire in route to the Baghdad airport on April 9, 2004. Steve was a towering figure, at 6 foot, 7 inches, but kind, quiet (like me!) and loveable. as a kid, i remember that Steve loved all things wierd and never left the house without his black, leather jacket. i can still picture the Dark Side of the Moon poster he had on his wall, and still g… Continue

Hazel Creek last weekend

hey fellow Gosmokians. i thought i'd share some pics from last weekend, mostly from Sunday. the foliage was beautiful, but still with a lot of green. my internal leafer radar says next weekend will be the sweet spot for the season.

after a long, grueling pass at slaying the dragon on US129, we earned our stripes and finally hit the lake around 1pm. Fontana Marina charged us $100 for two canoes, four PFDs, four paddles and a gentle nod to point us in the right direction. the lake was a slightly… Continue

Ashe, All the water pics were taken yesterday, 11/11. The river and falls were roaring loud with all the rain we've had. The river was out of it's bank and the falls were beautiful. Every little rut in the bank andn hills beside the road had its own little waterfall and the rocks were dripping steadily. I had to use the slow speed for most of the pics because I couldn't keep my lens dry and the raindrops looked like balloons with the normal speed. It was amazinghow much water was flowing and at 1000 Drips on RFMNT the water was ankle deep coming across th road from th "drips"! I wish you could have seen it. I was soaked from the knees down but it was a most wonderful day to see mother nature put on such a show!!!

No, the picture is from Gros Piton looking at Petite Piton in St. Lucia. If I ever go back to Hawaii I'll have to check that one out though.

Hey Ashe, I never looked closely at your picture until today. Is that Half Dome in the background? I'm so jealous!! We went to Yosemite years ago as a side trip from a business trip my husband took to San Francisco but could only stay a day. There was only enough time to drive around a little and see some of the highlights -- no time to hike :(. He's gone back since, but I haven't had the opportunity but it's definitely on my to-do list.

Hey Ashe...No, it wasn't you...lol The person it was knows who they are, but no not you. As I've said many times...people may not agree with what you say, but it's your opinion...which I value anyone's opinion..just may not agree? I would never be mad because someone gave their opinion, and I do like a bit of sarcasm on posts. I was really amazed with who it was, have sent messages back and forth a few times and got some good advice from them...Guess I just wasn't smart enough for them? Talk to you later!
